Is Selling Your Own Car A Bad Idea?
Have you ever tried to sell your own car? It can be a challenging and frustrating experience! My wife and I once tried to sell our used Ford Mustang. It turned out to be one of the most irritating things we’ve ever done. First of all, you must decide what to say in a classified ad. You must also decide how much you want to pay for the ad. Then, you’ll receive a barrage of telephone calls. Some people seem to have no intention of actually buying the car; they just want to waste your time.
Some people are genuinely interested in buying the vehicle, so you must set up a time to meet with them that is convenient. You will have to give them directions to your house, or find a common place to meet them. Unfortunately, even after going to all this trouble, some people will call and cancel at the last minute. Some might not show up to meet you at all.
When people do show up, you have to explain everything about the car to them. Tell them all of the car’s history, features, and problems. The person will probably want to test drive the car. It is more than a little nerve-wracking to ride in a car with a total stranger. But, you do not want them going off in your car alone either. By selling your own car, you are putting yourself in a slightly dangerous situation.
If they drive the car and they still want to buy it, then it is time to discuss prices. Haggling may come naturally to some people, but not to everyone! It can be awkward to discuss prices with someone you have never met before, and you don’t want to get taken, but you want them to take the car off your hands!
My wife and I went through this process several times before we finally realized that nobody was going to buy this car from us. It was a learning experience, and we will never try to sell our own car again. Luckily, you can learn from our experience, and save yourself a lot of trouble.
