Best Exterior Mustang Parts Upgrades

So you want to actually make your Mustang look different than the other 10 million on the road huh. It’s not so easy to set your Mustang apart from many of the others out there but it can be done. I love the Ford Mustang almost regardless of the various body styles over the years and all of them can of course be improved upon. However there are thousands Ford Mustangs everywhere and if you think that hot little lady that your to shy to talk to hasn’t seen a Mustang before, then your wrong.

The goals for many regarding the exterior will vary of course because as you can image you can go from mild to wild in terms of appearance. For starters, you might wonder what the top 5 most purchased exterior accessories are right? After all best selling products are so for a reason right. Below are the most common and impactful upgrades that are relitively easy.

  • #1 Mustang Wheels and Mustang Tires
  • #2 Mustang Headlights and Mustang Tail Lights
  • #4 Mustang Suspension / Mustang Lowering Springs
  • #5 Aftermarket Mustang Hoods

There are much smaller items which could be included in the top 5 but aren’t very impactful. Its like putting an air freshiner in the top 5 interior upgrades list lol. As such, some need not be mentioned for that reason. So you might ask the question “Doesn’t everyone end up buying the same thing and how does that make me different”. Well, its all how you formulate your entire approach of parts choices. With the category of the top 5 sold items listed, there are several different styles and plenty of ways to right and go wrong.

The most impactful exterior mod in my opinion is nothing other than Mustang Wheels and tires. There really isn’t anything you can buy that will make such a pronounced visual difference in your car. Frankly you can go very wrong with wheels and tires depending on what your after. For starters many people think if there car is white that they should consider white wheels. Afterall that sounds logical right? Well frankly, if I may be blunt, I have seen a few Mustangs that look clown-ish with white wheels. This finish also tends to be difficult to keep clean and contrary to common belief its tuff to pull of such a finish on white the right way.

Many colors contrast well with each other, which makes the decision of wheel finish at least a little easier. Black wheels and chrome wheels are my favorite due to their versatility. For example black and yellow go very well together. Do a Google image search for instance on black wheels installed on a yellow Mustang and you will see what I mean. Have you ever seen a yellow Mustang with those crazy awesome looking black racing stripes and deep dish black FR500 Wheels! Wow…

White and black also tend to flow much better together than would white on white. Often times silver Mustang owners go with silver or gunmetal wheels. In some cases this ends up looking rather bland, unless its done with the perfect wheel choice. Gunmetal and silver wheels look much better on white or really vibrant colors where chrome is too much bling for your tast and black just doesn’t fit your style. There are exceptions to the rule but the finish and wheel style play a big part. Your Mustang Tires can also play a part but generally only if your choosing wide wheels which will require a much wide Mustang Tire. Such wide wheel and tire combinations will provide a drag racing look that you probably won’t want to get rid of.

Your Mustang lighting can also make a big difference and even improve your visibility which defiantly isn’t a bad thing. A set of Mustang headlights are generally a great do it your self project. Bare in mind that some models, such as the 2005up Mustang may require the removal of the front bumper cover, which slightly increased the amount of time to change them out. On the 99-04 Mustang is a cake walk and headlights can be changed out in your garage in less than 10 minutes.

Another popular lighting component tends to be aftermarket Mustang tail lights. Keep in mind what I said about wheels. Tail lights often look great in black with several Mustang exterior themes and chrome is also available.

Finally is reducing that awful looking fenderwell gap right. Lowering your Mustang even modestly will give you much more aggresive stance. This can really only be done with lowering springs. Otherwise your going with tires that are too big and I’m not fond of an SUV tire on a Ford Mustang. Now I suggest a 1 – 1.5 inch drop for most people. First this drop range is cheaper and requires fewer parts than do more aggressive springs that hit the 2″ or over ranges.

The catch is that the more you drop your car, the rougher the ride quality will be. This may not matter if your like me and the only thing you care about is how fast you can go through that almost 90 degree curve! My Mustang suspension personally feels almost like a go-cart but it will hang ten when pushed hard in these situations. That being said I can also feel every little thing in the road. So to sum this up, a less aggressive spring will provide a bit of both worlds in terms of an increase in handling and and a balance of overall ride quality.

I hope this helps put some things in perspective and I intend on expanding on this in the article in the future. Good luck taking your Mustang to the next level.
