Adopt Wild Mustang Horses

Lessons from a Maverick
Maverick is a seven-year-old wild mustang. He was rescued in late November, 2009, from a horrifying environment. Over 300 horses were starving in paddocks as their friends died around them. Rescuers found 80 decaying carcasses of horses who had starved ahead of their friends. The dead were left to decay among the living, who awaited a similar fate. I can’t begin to imagine Maverick’s life.
He came to our ranch two weeks ago, as part of a Trainer’s Challenge. My trainer, Deb Cooper, is participating in the challenge. He arrived skeptical, afraid and resistant to any kind of human touch. Who can blame him? As you see in the following video, my trainer had to use a cane pole to begin to get him accustomed to any form of human interaction.
We all fell in love with Maverick, his soft eye and brave spirit. We started feeding him carrots through the rails, gradually added pats and rubs, and he responded. Maverick’s been with us for nine days. And what a difference we’ve seen in those nine days! On Friday, Deb rode Maverick for the first time. He was soft, mostly trusting, and willing to put his past behind him and move forward.
What a lesson this brave little horse has to offer. We’ll never know exactly how much he suffered at the hands of his captors, but we do know it was horrible. Yet Maverick’s brave spirit shines through. He had the courage to release his expectations, rightly founded on his past experiences. He let go of all that he’d known about humans, and chose to accept his reality as it is today.
How many of us humans can say we do the same? Do we release our assumptions based on past experiences?
Or do we hold onto our knowns about the economy, our business or personal lives, expecting tomorrow to be a repeat performance of our past?

If you’d like to follow Maverick’s progress – check out DebCooperHorses on YouTube! Maverick could not be in better hands than with Deb. She is, without a doubt, the most amazing horse whisperer I have ever met and I’m blessed to learn from her every day! We’ll be posting video updates through his training and beyond. Deb will train Maverick for another 60 days, then take him to show his stuff at an Expo in June which will showcase The Grace Foundation. After that, the horses will find their forever after homes.
In the meantime, I fell in love with Maverick, so I’ve adopted him. I want to make sure Maverick lives happily ever after! He becomes my third horsechild and I am so excited!
