The History Of The Hatchback
Back in the early 1970s American auto manufacturers like Ford began to offer what has become known as hatchbacks. One of the very first hatchbacks ever produced in the States was the Pinto. The low price factor made the Pinto very much in demand. This was the perfect vehicle for someone on a low budget. Simply put, it was a rudimentary form of transportation with very few perks. Hatchbacks are in style again and they are stylish and contemporary. In fact, today’s hatchback includes the creature comforts that people like. Add to that the cargo space that is easy to get to and the result is more people are buying them. It seems that the auto makers know that these cars are becoming more popular. According to WardsAuto.com, the number of hatchbacks produced and sold in the U.S. jumped by 63 percent during the 2006 to the 2010 model years. In raw numbers that is an increase from 291,853 units to 475,048 units. Meanwhile total car sales fell 23 percent during that period.
More and more auto makers including American, European and Asian, have added hatchback models to their lines. For example, Hyundai is offering the Accent, which includes a hatchback model. Hyundai expected 40 percent of all sales of the Accent to be hatchbacks. The Mazda3 hatchback version is ver popular and accounts for one fourth of all Mazda3 sales. However, the Mazda3 hatchback has a starting price of $19,685 and the Mazda3 sedan has an MSRP of $15,450. Toyota has been selling a subcompact called the Yaris since 2006. It also includes a hatchback model. Toyota said that the hatchback accounts for 60 percent of Yaris sales. Moreover, luxury brands like Audi and Porsche are offering hatchback models too. Audi has its A3 five-door and the A7 is coming. Porsche’s Panamera hatchback is already selling well and Aston Martin has its new Rapide. Lexus expects its 2011 CT 200h Hybrid to sell well and it is reported that Saab will soon introduce a 9-3 hatchback to the market.
