All About Hydrogen Cars
If you have been keeping up with the futurists, then about this time we should be seeing our streets full of hydrogen cars. So, what happened? Actually, nothing, it is certain that the hydrogen car is not the dominant form of transportation in 2011. It is not even a niche form of transportation at this time. Instead we are seeing electric cars like the Leaf and Volt.
Still, they’re here and if you are patient as you drive the highways of the country, especially in California, then you may see a hydrogen car once in a while. Of course, when we hear the word “hydrogen” we either conjure up a massive explosion and an ever growing mushroom shaped cloud or we think of some futuristic rocket or automobile. Actually, the idea of powering a vehicle with hydrogen is an old one. This technology has been around for quite some time. Many auto brands are building concept cars using this technology.
The fuel cell is a device which converts hydrogen to electricity. There are no pollutants as the result of the burning of hydrogen. It produces totally pure, clean air, heat and water as byproducts. Ford Flex Carrollton offers new and used sales and parts and service.
The process is expensive because of rare materials are used during the energy transformation process. Hydrogen fuel is not a product of nature. Instead it must be made from methane or some other fossil fuels. It can also be a byproduct of such resources as wind, solar or nuclear. Using these resources is not practical when a motor vehicle is involved. Thus the need for the fuel cell. Moreover, the infrastructure necessary to distribute the hydrogen fuel is not in place and the cost of hydrogen can be more than gasoline.
It would be amazing if we could develop a way to make hydrogen via water. Still, many major auto makers have pilot programs that are exploring the feasibility of hydrogen cars. Honda has a hydrogen car called the FCX Clarity. The very first model actually appeared in the late nineties. Honda is actually leasing the car to regular consumers in California. However, we are not going to see a lot of hydrogen cars on our highways until we have a viable infrastructure through which the fuel can be distributed, the cost of manufacturing fuel cells become more reasonable and the cost of a kilo of hydrogen falls more in line with a gallon of gasoline.
