Just Because Its A Luxury Car Doesn’t Mean It Can’t Go Fast – The 2011 Jaguar XJ
The previous few generations of Jaguar cars had the manufacturer in deep trouble. The automotive industry was shrinking and their line-up featured nothing new or exciting. But this all changes with Jaguar’s flagship vehicle getting revamped inside and out.
The high end luxury car segment is saturated with similar cars, but the goal of the 2011 Jaguar XJ is to entice customers who want something different. And the new XJ looks almost sinister. This four door sedan sports 20in. rims and has a robust V-8 engine to back it up.
The exterior has received a nice change. The glass line has been altered and extended with the rear curvign downwards to meet the trunk. The roof looks much lower almost like the car has been chopped. The Jaguar appears like it has one unbroken large piece of side glass, tinted of course.
The XJ is available in numerous variations with regards to wheel base and motors. The XJ model has the shorter 119in. wheel base and the XJL (L for large) has a 124in. wheel base. The very base model checks in at $72,500 with a DOHC 5-liter V-8 motor that puts out 385 hp 385 lb. ft. of torque. The top of the line buys you a supercharged version of the engine cranking out 510 hp and 461 lb. ft. or torque, it also gets you the larger wheel base. Price for everything is $115k for this: the super sport model. Oh and each car comes with a six speed auto transmission.
The XJ borrows some components from the sporty XFR including suspension bits. The XJ suspension is comprised of continuously variable dampeners. The body though has been made 11% stiffer over last year’s model. The curb weight just surpasses four thousand pounds, which in the world of luxury cars is considered very lightweight. This helps the XJ perform similar to a much smaller vehicle.
Performance figures check in at zerot to sixty miles per hour in 4.4 seconds and reaching the 1/4 mile in 12.7 seconds. Faster than a Camaro SS or Ford’s Mustang GT which consider themselves drag strip bruisers. Fuel economy checks in at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for the smaller engine and 15 mpg city 21 mpg highway for the 510 hp version. The Jaguar has an electronically controlled rear differential to put the power down. Inside the car is all luxury with its luxurious leather appointed seats, beautiful wood trim and ample accessories. The gauges grow bright where the needle is and the XJ has a sport mode. The Jaguar XJ also offers a 120 watt stereo.
Sales in the US have been slim, but Jaguar hope the new XJ will attract buyers who want an alternative to Benz or BMW.
