Air News On Port Elizabeth Air Show In South Africa,Aviation Appointments & Business Jets Super King Air Series 200,90,350i & Freighter B747-8
Despite of bad weather the Air Show at Port Elizabeth shined. Making its public debut at the air show was South Africa’s first privately-owned WWII P-51 Mustag, aptly named “Mustang Sally.”
However, this was not the only “first “for the event.
Also making their respective debuts in the City was a South African Air Force (SAAF) Hawk, as well as a Fokker F28 owned by AirQuarius.
Unfortunately the weather did not play along, but this in no way dampened the spirits of the crowd- estimated to have been between 10000 and 15000 people –who arrived to see one of the best air shows of its kind this year.
One could have easily mistaken the PE air show for a Unites States one because of the number of classic American aircraft which took part-aircraft such as the Trojan T28 ,the legendary T6 Harvard, a Boeing Stearman,Sea Fury, as well as the venerable P-51 Mustang were put through their paces.
If this was not enough, the fast and highly energized show of the three-ship Goodyear Eagles had the crowds on their feet with their jaw-dropping, fast-paced and electrifying performance.
The Goodyear Eagles’ performance is rather unique in that it starts from the moment they take off until the moment they land, whereas other performances usually start way above the crowd and make their way to the ground. As a second act, the Goodyear Eagles perform a triple inverted parachute drop.
Not to be outdone by the fixed-wing teams, the helicopter performances by two Bell 407 helicopters, two SAAF BK.117 helicopters and the South African Police Services Squirrel helicopter showed the crowds the agility of rotor aircraft.
Participation from the SAAF last year was in the form of the Hawk, BK.117, C47TP as well as the esteemed Silver Falcons.
This was the last time that the current Silver Falcons team flew together, as from this year the team will be swopping pilots and will see for the very first time a woman pilot as part of this world class SAAF team.
A potentially serious incident was averted when an oil seal burst on the engine of the Number 2 Silver Falcon during the show, but thanks to the brilliant and very highly trained pilots, the PC-7 landed safely with the aircraft intact and no injuries.
Showing the crowds why he is one of South Africa’s best aerobatic pilots, Patrick Davidson put his Extra aircraft through its paces , as he wowed the crowd with his precision aerobatic man oeuvres.
Making this years Port Elizabeth air show work so well was the fact that there where different aircraft displayed and not the usual machines that always entertain crowds around South Africa.
This years PE air show must go down as one of the best in 2010 and certainly rivaled that which was held earlier at Hoedspruit.
