Affluent Page Unveils: Barely Legal

When you absolutely, positively have to own a car that none of your friends will have in their garages, this Swiss-built supercar is sure to make your day. Manufactured in Wetzikon, Switzerland, a small town about a half hour southeast of Zurich, and the brainchild of Wysstec founder and engineer, Rolf Wyss, the Leblanc Mirabeau (named for Honoré Mirabeau, a famous orator and statesman during the French Revolution) is a shining example of the company’s fabrication talents.

Not unlike in design to the Audi LMP900 sports racer that dominated the track in the early 2000s, complete with massive rear wing and side air intakes large enough to suck in large pets, and constructed primarily of carbon fiber, the car’s amazing power-to-weight ratio makes it one of the fastest in the world.  A two-seater (while LMP cars have one seat, there’s room for two) with no top, it’s definitely a fair-weather car. However, pull up to a charity event in this and all eyes will be on you and your date; just be aware of short skirts when entering and leaving the car.

Perhaps more important than its distinctive styling, though, is the Mirabeau’s performance. Essentially a street-friendly Le Mans Prototype racer clone, its spec sheet describes a car that will run competitively with the fastest automobiles from Italy, France and the United States. Its monster engine, sourced from supercar maker Koenigsegg, ensures that it will lead the pack both on the street and the track. The car’s powerplant, originally derived from the Ford Mustang’s modular V8, was heavily reworked by Koenigsegg to ensure that it is among the fastest in the world. Equipped similarly to a racecar with a DOHC motor, dry sump lubrication and an oil cooler, the engine contains a Lysholm Screw supercharger that creates plenty of boost pressure at low RPMs relative to other systems. This package ends up cranking out more than 700 horsepower and an impressive 627 pound-feet.

Its light weight (under 1,800 pounds) and prodigious power are estimated to help the car hit 60 mph in less than 3 seconds (based on factory performance claims for its closed-top counterpart, the Caroline), and propel it to a top speed of about 230 mph. The rear mid-engine drives the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential manual gearbox, with a semi-automatic available as an option.

According to factory sources, the Mirabeau is engineered to meet all FIA (Federation Internationale de L’Automobile) requirements to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, though the company hasn’t sponsored a competition vehicle at the race as of 2010. Still, the intent to build a road-going vehicle that can be slightly modified to run one of the most renowned and grueling races in the world is an impressive feat.

Like most hand-manufactured specialty products, the Mirabeau can be optioned to meet the individual taste of its buyer. Pricing is likely to be in the $500K to $750K range, well in line with its staggering performance numbers, and its artisan manufacturing process means that the odds of finding this car in multiple garages in neighborhoods across America are quite slim. If the exclusivity of this vehicle is not enough to arouse your interest, the novelty of theoretically being able to bring it to Le Mans for competition in the race should seal the deal.
