Pontiac GTO For Sale
Automotive enthusiasts dream of finding a GTO for sale / Pontiac GTO for sale that they can afford. Even in the most fortunate case, it’s going to take a $10,000 investment to purchase a GTO for sale / Pontiac GTO for sale, and that will generally involve a vehicle that demands a great deal of work. For the collector who gravitates toward a fully restored GTO for sale / Pontiac GTO for sale, they can easily pay $50,000, and some GTOs sell at auction houses for more than $100,000.
So, why is this car worth so much today? Well, in addition to being an incredibly sexy and powerful muscle car, Pontiac only manufactured the GTO (Gran Turismo Omlogato) between 1964 and 1974. Moreover, while it initially sold very well, those numbers began to dwindle as competition among muscle cars increased. Eventually the GTO faded away as cars like the Mustang and Camaro took center stage. However, over the years, enthusiasts “re-found” the GTO, and reignited the fire for this car.
So, how did it all begin? Well, in 1963, General Motors issued an edict for its divisions banning them from a direct involvement in auto racing. This was a blow to the Pontiac division, for whom the involvement in auto racing had defined their name at the time. In an attempt to maintain that image, Pontiac turned its attention to street racing, but they were facing another problem. GM had a policy in place limiting engine displacement based on the size of the vehicle.
Pontiac realized their vision by taking the upcoming redesigned Tempest and giving it a “Super Tempest” equipment package. Since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, Pontiac was able to navigate around the restriction. However, GM was not fond of such tactics, and those in charge at Pontiac stood to lose a lot due to their deceit if their efforts were a failure. However, the 1964 Pontiac GTO was anything but a failure. Limited to just 5,000 units initially, Pontiac sold 10,000 units prior to the 1964 calendar year, and sold 32,000+ units in total.
For the 1965 model year, backed by a potent GM-powered advertising blitz, Pontiac sold 75,000+ GTO units. The following year, sales of the GTO peaked at close to 100,000 units. The 1967 GTO marked the end of the vehicle’s first generation, and sales fell to 81,000+ units. However, this was still a very strong number since Pontiac was facing stiffer competition from new entries into the market as well as a redesigned Ford Mustang that was receiving a great deal of attention.
Now that Pontiac was battling Dodge, Plymouth, and other divisions within GM, in addition to Ford, Pontiac gave the GTO a major redesign in order to keep up. No longer was the GTO essentially an equipment package on top of the Tempest. Now, built on GM’s A platform, it was very much its own vehicle, and the GTO didn’t miss a beat. Sales went up to 87,000+ units, and Motor Trend magazine honored it with its Car of the Year award.
However, sales dipped by nearly 15,000 units the following year, and the GTO was outsold by both the Chevrolet Chevelle and the Plymouth Road Runner. The GTO was showing a chink in its armor. It didn’t have the power options to mix it up with the big boys of the muscle car market anymore, and the other intermediate muscle cars were beating it in terms of price level. Pontiac never took decisive action to remedy that, and by the time Pontiac discontinued the line in 1974, sales were down to just 7,000+ units.
