2011 Camaro Pictures Are Now Available
After all the excitement about the return of the Camaro not too previously, the news along with all the 2011 Camaro pictures that are cropping up it is somewhat showing to be underwhelming. It’s not that there’s anything wrong, there just is not a whole lot of change when equated with the 2010. The V6 motor horsepower rating has grown from 304 horsepower in 2010 to 312 HP in 2011. The torque has gone from 273 lb-ft to 278 lb-ft. Unfortunately this does not reflect any improvement in the engine. What has changed is that SAE certification has been finished, so the earlier conservative specifications have been replaced with specs derived from the certification. The other performance specifications are unchanged from the 2010 model.
This means that the V6 Camaro is now slightly ahead of the comparable Mustang in the paper horsepower derby. Unfortunately the Camaro is lagging the Mustang in fuel efficiency, 29 MPG for the Camaro vs 29 or 30 miles per gallon for the Mustang. There is enough of room for discussion of these attributes between enthused Camaro and Mustang owners. For the driver, an exciting new development is the accessibility of a Head Up Display (HUD) on some models, much in-line with that discovered on the Corvette. The HUD displays the speed, RPM, radio station, and more on the windshield. OnStar navigation instructions also show on the HUD.
The official GM site does not mention this, but rumor has it that a 2011 Camaro SS Convertible might be announced soon. Apparently it can be a cloth top. It will have small quarter windows and a glass rear window. It will have a unique spoiler and a shark fin antenna on the rear. The bad news is that the relaunch of the Camaro Z28 will come about in the 2012 model year. Earlier reports had claimed this would take place in the 2011 model year. It appears that the GM financial crisis caused a slight delay. It should be out sometime late in 2011. The expression is that it will have a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 with roughly 556 horsepower.
The two V8 engine options for the 2011 Camaro are unchanged from 2010. With the six speed manual transmission, the V8 option is the 6.2 liter LS3 producing 426 brake horse power at 5900 revolutions per minute and 420 lb-ft. At 4600 revolutions per minute. The 6 speed auto transmission comes with the 6.2 liter L99 V8, which produces 400 brake horse power at 5900 revolutions per minute and 410 lb-ft. At 4300 revolutions per minute. The L99 motor has Active Fuel Management, which deactivates half of the cylinders under light load. This gives significantly better mileage.
After seeing the 2011 Camaro interior pictures the styling has a retro feel to it, though the instruments represent today’s technology. Regrettably the wheel, manual shift lever, and gas pedal do not represent good ergonomic design. They are all more tough to use than they should be. The grade of the interior materials is not great and the backseat is very cramped, though the latter is not uncommon in this family of car. The trunk opening is tiny enough that putting larger items in the trunk may be challenging.
To sum up, the 2011 Camaro is a worthy successor to the 2010, though it hasn’t changed very much. The minor changes that are present are improvements. The upcoming convertible and Z28 should make for some excitement in Camaro land.
